Shock. Those are the only words I can fathom as The X Factor Top 11 results show came to a close. I was going to talk about what an amazing job Fleur East did on her performance. I was going to discuss Cee Lo Green's flowery ass mural of a self and his vocals that never disappoint but what did disappoint me were the results of this show.
I'm going to start out by once again stating that I am firmly #TeamGrimmie. His boys have been nothing short of fantastic since the 6 chair challenge. They proved to be a tight knit group of guys and it was so hard to see two of my favorite contestants in the sing off. There was a moment during the pre-show when Sean was sitting on Che's lap and I immediately thought back to when I thought that the boys' relationship might be a little manufactured or exaggerated for the show. As the two shared laughs as they met with the Xtra Factor hosts, I realized that their relationship wasn't inauthentic. It was real. The three boys and their mentor share a bond and it's hard to see that bond be broken as we were forced to say goodbye to a true talent tonight.
First off, Kiera Weathers was eliminated immediately. There was no shock there but it was hard to see her improve so much from last week to just have her eliminated the following night. Her exit statement was graceful and I hope she is able to have a fulfilling career, whether it's the music industry or not. She has something.
I was right about Kiera but boy was I wrong about everything else. As Monica was swifted off to safety I shrugged it off because I like her and she will come back swinging next week, hopefully. I got up off of my couch a almost smacked the UK when I heard Anton Stephans was safe. Anton is a lovely man but that performance he gave was nothing short of absolutely dreadful and uncomfortable to watch. I hope that he can prove to us there was reason the public voted through or Anton is sailing straight into Stevie Ritchie territory.
I almost popped a molly but was indeed sweating when the bottom two was revealed to be Mason Noise and Sean Miley Moore. I'll get into more detail about why these were so shocking as I review the sing off.
First up was Mason Noise. The moment I heard the track was End of the Road by Boyz 2 Men, I got up off of my couch and had my hands in the air. When you sing this song, you need to do more than sing it. You need to sang it. That's almost what Mason Noise up there during his sing off. The realization I came to with Mason tonight is that, while an excellent performer, there's almost no emotional connection when he's singing. He was technically hitting most of the notes but without a strong voice and an emotion connection, you're toast. And Mason was pretty much toast, at least I thought.
Sean on the other hand was distraught. It was a beautiful performance of his, something I have gotten used to witnessing and something I will truly miss. As soon as Sean uttered his first line, "I've been so many places in my life and time," I stood up as well and told that little boy to sing his half Filipino ass off. He was hitting the correct notes, yes, but the thing that separated him from Mason is his emotional connection. He felt the lyrics of the song and he was fighting for his life out there and I could feel it.
It wasn't enough for the judges though, or at least Rita Ora. Rita sent Sean home, which allowed for Nick to send it to deadlock and have the public decide. I'm glad the public was able to decide (although, not really, because it was their fault we had such a talented duo in the sing off) because it would have felt wrong to send either of them home because the judges are clearly aware that the two belonged there. In fact, Cheryl told them it was the hardest sing off she'd ever had to judge for and I understand completely where she was coming from.
Same, Anton. Same. SAME. |
Sean Miley Moore ended up getting the fewest number of votes and was sent home well before his time. Once again, the public got it 50/50 this week. I'm truly going to miss him and his amazing theatrical performances and powerful production that allowed for the audience to feel as if they were at an awards show week after week. I hope this isn't the last we hear of Sean Miley Moore, he was an absolute joy to have on the show.
This week I was going to introduce a new segment where I talk a little about the contestants and analyze how they did this week and what they need to do in order to maintain their moment or build momentum. I'll still do it this week, but I'll just do it later in the week. I love writing about The X Factor so why limit it here and not just do a whole other post for it? Thanks for reading, and I'll see you later in the week (or next week, whenever you - hopefully - decide to return!)
