Selena Gomez's latest album Revival was released a month ago and a couple of her songs from that album have been very popular on the radio. So, it is only fitting that I write about my favorite song on this album. Here are my views and opinions and overall thoughts on the song "Revival" by Selena Gomez.
First of all, let me say that I am not a big follower of Selena Gomez. That is not to say that I do not like her because I admire her. I loved her in her Disney days and I love how she is growing up and maturing. I simply do not keep up with her and her life and her career as often as others do. So, what is it about this song that has me blasting it in my car on my way to school in the mornings?
This song is different than any of Selena's previous music. The songs on her first solo album were more EDM type songs e.g Come and Get It, Forget Forever, Slow Dow. EDM is not my go to genre of music. With that being said, I have only heard Selena's songs on the radio sM is all I knew of hero ED. You can imagine how surprised I was when I heard the beginning instrumentals of this song. This song is more of a medium-paced tempo and it gives off a very aerial and lofty vibe. Automatically I fall in love because aerial and lofty is my thing. There is also a hint of trap instruments in this song ( for y'all who don't know, trap instruments are the instruments common in trap music). When she sings "What shot out of me like a rifle, was a revival", you would think that Migos produced just that one line of the song. I appreciate Selena branching out from doing her usual thing. Selena stepping out of her comfort zone shows us that our little Selena from Selena Gomez and the Scene is all grown up now.
Speaking of growing up, let's discuss the cover art real quick...
..oh um hey Selena. All I really have to say is yes girl, yes. Selena has a nice body so I am proud of her for embracing it in the cover. But I also think it speaks a message of her becoming "reborn in every moment". This is her reborn self, naked and stripped of the past. Only the future is ahead for her.
But anyway, the thing that really made me fall in love with this song is the message behind it. It hits home for me and probably a lot of others. Although I have not gone through the same struggle as her, I can relate to her drive to survive and stay alive and revive herself.
I believe Selena wrote this song to show the world that she is coming out of the closet of struggle and into the room of the revived. This song is not just for Selena. It is for any person who has had a point in his or her life where his or heart has been broken or has gone through a long period of pain and they have finally found the strength to get back up again and be a better, stronger, and improved person. She begins the song with her speaking the words " I dive into the future, but I'm blinded by the sun, I'm reborn in every moment so who knows what I'll become". Let me remind you of the ocean waves in the background as she is speaking these words. Can't you just imagine her on a beach walking and thinking the exact words?! But just that one sentence explains how she has overcome everything that has brought her beautiful soul down. This song will bring you to tears and having you feel empathetic and sympathetic for Selena but will also have you wanting to revive yourself.
The combination of great composition and rateable and inspiring lyrics makes this song the wonder that it is. So if you have not listened to this song I suggest you do. If you have listened to this song already, go back and listen and really listen to the words. After that listen again and let the music flow through you as you are reciting the lyrics and let it motivate you to rise up and overcome.
