Who is Fancy? I'll admit it, I had absolutely no idea who or what a fancy was up until I saw the artwork for this single. Apparently Who is Fancy was a campaign around the singer's song "Goodbye" and releasing it without revealing who the person was singing it. It was actually a brilliant idea, with Hagood [Jake Hagood, aka Who Is Fancy] allowing people to "know [his] art" before they knew him. It's one of the biggest controversies in the music industry. Is someone popular because their music is good and speaks to people, or because they're attractive and everyone is just a bunch of horny kids? This was highlighted as one of the candidates for fancy was a fairly stereotypical model-esque white guy who takes over the majority of the Google image search for "Who is Fancy Goodbye Singer," even more than the actual "Who Is Fancy"... Regardless, Who Is Fancy has a wonderfully smoky, calm and soothing voice that is highlighted during this song.
The song starts out with a bass guitar and claps and is WIF[Who Is Fancy]'s voice is adding into the mix not soon after. The soon quickly establishes itself as a cross between a doo-wop & pop song, ironically two things Meghan Trainor has been doing flawlessly so her voice fits right in to this song. The chorus is really catchy, you can't help but bop your head and sing along. I'm having trouble writing this because I'm listening to it right now and can't sit still. My favorite thing about the song is each singer/verse has it's own bridge leading into their individual chorus so it allows a great build up to the song's next "moment." Trainor and WIF doing a crossover song is probably an absolute no brainer because their styles are so similar and their voices melt together like butter.
Hold up, though, because Ariana Grande stole the spotlight in this song. WIF & Trainor sounded absolutely amazing in their own right but by the time Grande popped in, the song went to another level. Grande swooped in like a thief in the night with that gorgeous lower register she doesn't show off as much as she should. I think the only song she's really showed it off was "One Last Time," but boy did it work for this song. Her talent was only magnified as she hit a riff that took her from her lower register, back into her upper register, then back down and back up for her bridge. When the song hit back into the chorus, with Grande's vocals in now, only uplifting the already beautiful melody and glorious trio's harmonies. Not only was it the best of the three chorus' but their vocals got even better as the three ad-libbed the hell out of the end of the song. The last fifteen seconds had Trainor and WIF blended their perfectly matched voices together before Grande joined in at the last second and allowed the song to [literally] end on the perfect, acapella note.
I haven't listened to "Goodbye" by WIF yet, but I might do a review of it soon. If this is a sneak preview of what Who Is Fancy is bringing to us in the new year, we might have a new dark horse in the music industry. This song was just the perfect blend of great lyrics, amazing vocalists, and wonderful production. I think it would have benefited from being released back in May-July because it would have been a great summer song. The entirety of the song had me visualizing a party on the beach!
